I participate each year in NaNoWriMo - National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo, in a nutshell, is a 30-day challenge to write at least 50,000 words. Frenzied, hurried, fun. And a complete adrenaline rush.
I've done it for the past two years. It appears to be the only way I can get a novel done. Maybe I thrive best on deadlines, I don't know. Maybe it's one of my spiritual gifts (haha!) But I do work best under a deadline. Really. Have I mentioned I won four Hoosier State Press Association Awards for News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure? Yes, I am that good.
So in 2009, I decided to tackle NaNoWriMo. At that point I was a stay-at-home mom, and thought I could use the distraction. My husband was very supportive of the idea, and took care of Lucas and the house (and dinner), for the most part, for the entire month of November, 2009.
I ended that year with 50,932 words. After revisions and editing, my word total came to 51,339. The "novel" is called popKandi. Funny story with it is that I came up with the title before coming up with the plot. Or the characters. Or anything. It's about this girl, Kandi, who is a little bit of an anti-social workaholic who is an assistant to a Hollywood agent. One of the agency's top clients gets murdered, and Kandi decides to play Nancy Drew and investigate. But she's not a very good detective. Like, a seriously bad one. So is her investigating partner, Brendon, another client of the firm - whom Kandi thinks is shallow and conceited and pretty much annoying. Yes, it ends up where it sounds like it's going to go with them.
So I didn't know at the time to started NaNoWriMo that if you meet the 50,000 word goal, you get a free proof copy of your "novel" from Createspace.com. Yes, I do actually have a paperback copy of popKandi:
My husband took the photo for me. I used Createspace.com's template designer for the cover. If I wanted, I could click the little "approve" button on the website and have it uploaded for sale on Amazon.com. But I don't want to do that.
So...............when popKandi was in my head, I kind of imagined a trilogy. So last year I wrote the sequel - rockKandi. This time, one of Brendon's co-stars is being stalked - a very pretty co-star who makes Kandi jealous. So Kandi, being the awesome detective she is, decides to try to figure out who the stalker is. But all she succeeds in doing is making the stalker come after her.
I ended the 30 days with 50,853 words. After editing and revising, 51,181. I just ordered the proof copy this morning.
I had planned to start work on the third one in November when NaNoWriMo rolled around - but then I heard that there might be a summer session of NaNoWriMo! I can't find any concrete details about it, tho, so I'm kind of bummed. BUT...if there is a summer session, I will be out of commission for most of the month - because I can't resist NaNoWriMo!

The one with OPI Jade is the New Black+Sinful Colors Green Ocean
I had been wanting Sinful Colors Green Ocean for quite a while, but I had never been able to find it. I chalk it up to living in a polish wasteland. I have to go far away - or pay big prices - to get cool polish colors. Annnnyway - I have an awesome friend, Devin over at At Your Fingertips, who offered to trade me for Green Ocean :) I decided to test it out over OPI Jade is the New Black first...
This is one of my top 10 fave polishes. I totally need to do a post with my top 10 polishes eventually. This is just one coat over a base of China Glaze Strong Adhesion. No top coat because I knew I would be topping with Green Ocean.
Before I show pics of the finished manicure, a few things: Green Ocean is a green-tinted base with flakies and glitters. It's not easy to work with. Actually, it's a pita; downright annoying.
But it's worth it.
**DISCLAIMER** I was not paid for this review by anyone. I either purchased these polishes myself or were given gifts as friends because I could not find the particular shade I wanted myself. I am not a professional nail tech, nor do I want to be. I'm just someone who enjoys polishing my own nails :)

About Nailtini...
MICHELLE TOMA OLSON
FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT, ‘TINI BEAUTY
Like so many little girls, Michelle Toma Olson loved to play with her mother’s cosmetics, and at age eight, she developed a special passion for eye shadow. Undaunted by the fact that she wasn’t allowed to use makeup, she was found a barely-there peach shade that she delighted in wearing, undetected, at every opportunity she could find.
In high school, thankfully by then able to wear makeup without any subterfuge, Toma Olson became known as much for the giant palette of eye shadows she kept in her backpack as for her academic aptitude. At lunch each day, she would use this palette, her most prized possession, to do all of her friends’ eyes, often replicating looks from covers of Vogue. She went on to do the makeup for her school’s plays, even inspiring a visiting awards committee to create a new category to award her an impromptu “Oscar” for her work on the production of “Cinder-fella.”
Through college and beyond, Toma Olson never lost her passion for playing with beauty products, routinely altering products to her liking, sometimes by combining or mixing them to get a specific look. In fact, when she married Loren Olson in 1998, she concocted a custom nail color for her day – a soft, shimmery lavender-mauve.
Today, Toma Olson combines beauty sense with business acumen as the founder and president of ‘Tini Beauty and its Nailtini and Liptini brands. A native of Whittier, California, Toma Olson graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California in 1991 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in business and finance and a minor degree in French. After working in the marketing department of a community bank, she returned to USC on a Carl Reichardt fellowship, obtaining her MBA in 1995 with a concentration in marketing and entrepreneurship, knowing that a career as an entrepreneur would be the ideal way for her to nurture and utilize both her creative and logical sides.
After graduation, Toma Olson spent several years in brand management, an experience that prepared her well to head her own company. “A boss once told me that being a brand manager – responsible for every aspect of a brand – was like being a mini CEO,” she says. Her first position in brand management was at the Dep Corporation, where she co-managed the Dep brand and eventually launched the Theorie hair care line, a trailblazer in what would become the “mass-tige” category. She then accepted a position at Renaissance Cosmetics’ Cosmar division, where her work as brand manager on Nail Fetish and on the launch of Fetish Cosmetics with Christina Aguilera earned her a promotion to senior brand manager on Nat Robbins, a $22 million mass color cosmetic brand. Toma Olson was then tapped to become Director of Marketing at Advanced Research Labs with a $125 million brand portfolio including Citre Shine and Thicker Fuller Hair. While there, she spearheaded the conceptualization of Got2B, and at only 30 years old, was promoted to Vice President.
Toma Olson then took her first step toward entrepreneurship and began working as an independent consultant. This also gave her greater flexibility to start a family, and she and Loren welcomed daughter Natasha in 2001. It was during this period that Toma Olson started fleshing out concepts in hopes of launching her own brand. Having always been intrigued by the notion of “cocktailing”– using more than one product to create the desired effect – the idea of building a brand around it struck a chord with both the beauty lover and the businesswoman her. Thus, the ‘Tini Beauty concept was born.
“Nail polish was not a high interest category at the time, and I thought that should change,” recalls Toma Olson, who poured the very first Nailtini polishes in her kitchen. She had enough experience to know what ingredients she wanted and didn’t want, and access to the resources she would need to produce a product line. She launched Nailtini Cocktails for Nails in June of 2004 as one of the first premium polish lines free of formaldehyde, toluene and DBP, and her timing couldn’t have been better. Allure and other magazines quickly featured the line, and Toma Olson went out knocking on doors. Soon retailers and consumers were knocking on hers. The line now encompasses more than 40 SKUs, including Straight Up Color and Mixer lacquers, special-effect Topper top coats and a collection of indulgent at-home mani-pedi products.
It wasn’t long before Toma Olson was ready for the natural progression to a largest segment of the beauty category, lips. Liptini was launched in 2006 with a full range of Straight Up Color lipsticks, Mixer lip color and base pencils and Topper glosses, along with the now best-selling, long-wearing, non-drying Lip Liqueur lip and cheek stains and has since been expanded to include Lip Cordial shimmering tints. With more exciting new products on tap for Nailtini and Liptini , as well as an entire line of unique cocktail-inspired eye cosmetics under the Eyetini brand name, the sky is truly the limit for ‘Tini Beauty.
Today, Nailtini and Liptini products are sold online and in selected boutiques, spas and salons across the US, and are among the featured “indie” brands in the new Beauty 360 specialty store chain where consumers can receive mini-services while they fall in love with the cocktailing concept. ‘Tini Beauty is also spreading out globally, soon to be available in the UK among other European destinations, as well as South Africa and the Middle East.

Janie Bryant’s New “Garden Party” Collection for Nailtini
Here's a media release from Nailtini - a brand I have been eyeing for some time. I have also included some general info about the brand. I will feature a post about the founder and president tomorrow :)
Everything’s Coming Up Roses…
and Carnations and Cocktails:
Janie Bryant’s New “Garden Party” Collection for Nailtini
Is Polished Perfection for Spring/Summer 2011
Fashion and flirtation. Perfumed blooms and passed libations. The garden party -- where cocktails and passions are stirred in equal measure – is the inspiration for Nailtini’s spring/summer polish collection designed by Janie Bryant, the Emmy winning fashion designer, author of The Fashion File (Grand Central, 2010) and creator of her own “MOD” line of women’s wear for QVC as well as the fashions seen on AMC’s “Mad Men.”
“The garden party is such a civilized concept, but beneath all those good manners and chic frocks, there’s an underpinning of drama, where anything can happen. The colors in the collection reflect these delightful contradictions,” says Bryant of her second collaboration with Nailtini, which comes on the heels of her highly acclaimed fall holiday limited edition for the brand. The limited edition Garden Party collection has everything from petit-four pastels to a punchy high-shine patent to a sheer shimmery veil that can be worn alone or as an overlay.
Blushing Lady: This candy shell pink with a sophisticated touch of lavender is likely just the color Edith Piaf had in mind when she sang “La Vie En Rose.” A graceful accompaniment to a floral sheath or flouncy skirt, “Blushing Lady” is ultra-feminine but never shy, and just right for the modern garden party.
Blue Carnation: A soft, creamy blue with a jade-like milkiness, this porcelain polish is a new school tribute to an old school cocktail and its namesake flower. Skip the corsage, and instead, accessorize your fingers or toes with Blue Carnation.
Admiral Perry: It wouldn’t be a proper garden party without an intriguing and dapper suitor among the guests. You’ll take a shine to his dress blues, and to the patent-leather gleam of this royal blue lacquer.
Garden Jubilee: Botany keeps re-inventing the rose with endless new hybrids. Beauty follows suit with Garden Jubilee, a shimmery “floridescent” veil that captures the prettiest greens and pinks of the rose bed in one bottle. Wear it on bare nails or as a top coat to create a nail cocktail with true flower power.
In addition to her multiple Emmy® nominations as “Outstanding Costume Designer for a Series” and a 2005 win for “Deadwood,” Janie Bryant is the recipient of the 2009 and 2010 Costume Designers Guild Award for “Outstanding Period/Fantasy TV Series” for her work on “Mad Men.” She was named to Vanity Fair’s 2010 list of “Top 100 Influencers,” as well as to the LA MOCA Costume Council.
Suggested retail price for each 0.5 fl. oz. bottle $14. Available at qvc.com, Beauty 360 and Duane Reade Look Boutiques. For samples, images, or further information, please contact Jan Sheehan at jan@kipmorrison.com or 817.348.9490.
THE TEN-MARTINI LUNCH
Nailtini Cocktails for Nails
Nailtini Cocktails for Nails
Welcome to Nailtini, where the liquor meets the lacquer and there’s no such thing as last call. Nailtini is designed to maximize options and creativity, offering a menu of professional nail colors, mixers and toppers that look great straight, on the rocks or with a mixer.
Uniquely formulated for layering, Nailtini Straight Up Colors are the perfect ratio of viscosity and pigment. Straight Up Colors are primarily creams and free of thickening agents, like mica, which tend to complicate the drying process. Every bottle of Straight Up provides color coverage with a shot of shine. Whether you prefer Brandy, Bloody Mary or Bordeaux, your color goes down smooth.
So, go ahead, pour yourself a stiff one from dozens of shades of Straight Up Color. Too strong? Lighten it with a layer of Cream or a splash of Crushed Ice. Garnish with a Swizzle Stick or one of six other stencil designs from the Garnish Book. Each layer of lacquer dries in five minutes or less so you can mix up the perfect four-part cocktail in less than half an hour.
No round of cocktailing is complete without at least a shot of Vodka topper coat. And like the entire Nailtini line, Vodka contains no formaldehyde or toluene, which can dehydrate nails.
Whatever your pleasure or poison, Nailtini offers a cocktail approach to your next manicure.

The one with China Glaze Shower Together+OPI Sparkle-icious
I'm not gonna lie. Lately I've been on a real base color+sparkle kick. I keep telling myself it looks neat...but I think I'm just making up for the fact that I can't get my hands on a bottle of OPI Mad as a Hatter. That polish is going for, like, $75 on eBay because it's discontinued. I just can't pay that price for one bottle.
ANYWAY. On to the pretties! I used a base of one of my most favorite colors of all time - China Glaze Shower Together. This may be the first polish I have to buy a second bottle of because I've used it so many times :)
This beautiful blue-green is from China Glaze's eCollection. Its one of my go-to colors when I can't decide what to wear. I decided to use this as my base because Sparkle-icious has a blue glitter in it. I got Sparkle-icious is a trade from the lovely Tara at Tough as Nails and Twice as Pretty. (I need to remember to start mentioning other bloggers who do polish swaps with me. I've also done swaps in the past with Traci at The Trace Face Philes).
Sparkle-icious is one of the glitters from the OPI Burlesque collection that were a holiday 2010 release. It's packed with blue, gold and purple glitter. I need to try this glitter over white and black polish, as well as on it's own. I also had someone mention trying it over a navy blue polish. That's also a possibility in the future :)
In the meantime, I'll let the sparkle do the talking :) These pictures were taken after two days of wear, hence the slight tipwear.
I have planned another giveaway for when I reach 150 followers...that's not far off! :)

The one with Pac-Man
hahaha yeah, I was crazy enough to try Pac-Man nail art. It ended up being super simple, and only took about a half an hour! Here's the colors I used:
I started with one coat of Black Creme....made my Pac-Man out of Pippa ... my dots were the Pure Ice and my ghost was the OPI color.
I know it's messy!! I used a toothpick to make every design, keep that in mind, too lol
I'm going to work on it and try again. Maybe once I get proper dotting tools it will work out even better :)

The one with Pure Ice French Kiss+OPI Last Friday Night
While grocery shopping one day I picked up several Pure Ice polishes, my favorite being French Kiss, a bright, royal blue creme. My husband's favorite color is blue...so sometimes I'll buy blue nail polish, just to make it seem like my purchases are for him, too. hahah
In direct sunlight...it's along the same lines as Zoya Breezi and OPI Suzi Says Feng Shui. But it's not as dirty, and is more, well, royal.
Here is indirect sunlight. Still glossy and creamy beautifulness.
The shade offers a cooler tone...
...while indoors with a flash offers a bit more glossiness. But lately I've had a thing for sparkles...
So I couldn't stop myself from adding OPI's Last Friday Night! I will let the sparkly goodness do the talking!
IT POPPED. LIKE WOAH. I will most definitely be using this combination again in the near future.
**DISCLAIMER** I was not paid for this review by anyone. I either purchased these polishes myself or were given gifts as friends because I could not find the particular shade I wanted myself. The one with OPI Glow-ink In The Dark
I'm not usually one for nail trends or out-of-the-ordinary nail stuff. Shatter? Crackle? Don't care for it. Neons? Nudes? Not so much. But one day I stumbled upon the OPI Tattoo Ta-Boo mini set...
I had won a $5 gift certificate from a local radio station to a semi-local salon, so I decided to go and see what I could find. This set was marked 50% off, and with my gift certificate, I paid a whopping 88 cents for this box. The color included, in mini form, were Witch Arm?, Glow-ink in the Dark, Tattoo You Want Candy? and I Love Mummy.
The only one of the set I've used? Glow-ink in the Dark. The bottle is now empty. I used a white polish as a base and like 4 coats of Glow-ink in the Dark.
It's a nice, pretty lavender-esque purple. But when you put it under a blacklight...
Kinda white-ish? Starting to glow? What happens when we turn off the lights?
Yes, it glowed that well. I wish I had more of it. I'd LOVE a full sized bottle if anyone wants to donate one to me :)
**DISCLAIMER** I was not paid for this review by anyone. I either purchased these polishes myself or were given gifts as friends because I could not find the particular shade I wanted myself. I am not a professional nail tech, nor do I want to be. I'm just someone who enjoys polishing my own nails :)

The one with China Glaze High Def
I'm not much for holos. I only grabbed this one because I could. I'm not really in love with it, but it looks neat :)
Base of China Glaze Strong Adhesion, two coats of High Def and a top coat of ORLY Sec'nDry. It really did flash in the sun...it's just not my style. To each his own :) Application was GREAT, just like most China Glaze polishes :)
Here's a close-up on the nail so you can see some of the holo :) Short post, I know haha

The one with OPI My Throne for a Cranberry Scone+Teenage Dream
I've really been in to using more than one polish per mani lately - and this one is no exception :) I fell in love with OPI My Throne for a Cranberry Scone when I picked it up from a friend's yard sale (Thanks Raven!!). This is one coat of MTFACS, with a base of Nail Life Nail Revitalizer.
The polish was thiiiiiick. Probly because it's an older bottle ... but it's still so pretty!! At any rate, I felt it needed to pop a little. So enter OPI Teenage Dream...
Sparkly! Then I blurred it a little so you could see the sparkle better...
My hand hurt when I went to take it off, so I actually used the foil method for removal...but only because my hand hurt :)

The one with OPI Stranger Tides+China Glaze Atlantis
I had wanted some of the new OPI Pirates of the Caribbean Collection since they had been announced, but I was never quite sure if I would ever get them. But thanks to my friend Summer, I got the shades I wanted - including Stranger Tides, a murky green that leans to the sage end of the color spectrum. I wasn't too sure about it when looking at the bottle, but on the nail...*phew* love the color!
So pretty! This is a base of China Glaze Strong Adhesion, two coats of Stranger Tides and a top coat of Poshe. The formula was smooth and even. I had no problems with it at all...however, I wanted it to pop a little more.
So I added China Glaze Atlantis, one of my most favorite sparkly toppers :)
It really brought a lot of blue into the mix, and made it all sparkly :)
And then Lucas decided he wanted his picture taken with the sparkly goodness...
