Ok, so today I decided to veer a little differently. Everyone's nails (well, for the most part) look flawless with polish (if it's applied correctly). I guess I just wanted to dispel any myths about my nails...because they are absolutely not perfect. I work hard on my nails, but sometimes things happen. The worst for me is cuticles and peels...
Six years ago I had an accident, which really damaged my arm. My left hand is still largely numb. I have to type with only my ring finger on this hand...hence the one edge of my ring finger constantly in a state of see-thru-ness (is that a word? haha it is now!) It's the only thing taking a beating...and because of the way my wrist doesn't bend like it used to, that edge of the nail is always the place hitting the keyboard. The "uneven free edge" is actually something out of my control that changes day-to-day. My pointer and middle finger have changed. I have new fingerprints. And from the lack of use (I rarely use these two fingers for anything), my nail bed has changed. It's attached farther up the underside of my nail that all the other fingers...
It looks like underside of my nails is never, ever clean. It always looks like there's something underneath my nail. And you bet it STINGS LIKE FIRE when I separate it on accident. The first time it brought me to tears because it hurt so bad. Add that pain on top of my nerves going insane whenever I have even the slightest injury to my left hand. Once I got a papercut, and I swear it felt like someone was breaking my hand with a hammer.
And just for good measure, let's check out my right hand. hahahahh! HAHAHAHAH! THIS IS ON THEIR WORST DAY. My hand does not always look like this...I just wanted to show how bad it can be. Let me preface this by saying that because of the limited mobility of my left hand, I have issues taking care of my right hand. All the peely cuticles, all the ickiness...it's a direct result of my inability to properly condition and remove cuticles. I dare not use the nippers because sometimes my left hand shakes or twitches. So I'm left with cuticle remover gel and clumsily pushing the cuticles around with an orange stick...and my left hand doesn't have much strength...so you can imagine :)
*phew* There you have it. "What lies beneath" my polish. Granted my nails so NOT always look like this. I just wanted to show everyone that nails are more than likely never perfect. You can cover a lot with polish :)

I feel ya! I get so many comments on my nails which I really do think are gorgeous...when polished! y naked nails...yikes!
ReplyDeletei'm glad i'm not the only one! :)
DeleteI'm right there with you. With my wonky pinky & all.
ReplyDeleteit happen to the best of us then! i'm glad i'm in good company.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about your accident. But uhm... my culticles might look worse than yours, hahaha! I think they're pretty okay, though. Plus, I use my nails for all kinds of grunt work, like opening packages and peeling stuff off. That's why the white edges are almost always in bad shape. Still, I like my naked nails. They are as white as natural nails can be so there's no complaing from me there!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE nails with better color. Mine always have a slight yellow to them. I had always used them as tools...I'm working on stopping that :)
DeleteConsidering all you've been thru' your nails look wonderful! I do have a suggestion for the peelies & chippy left ring finger? Orly Nail Bonder! This wonderful lil kit is available at Sally's Beauty & is great for vertical splits & peeling tips. You apply the cyanoacryliic glue (the bottle has a brush), dip your nail in the acryllic powder then buff smooth once the glue dries. No more peels or cracks & it re-enforces your nails so they are more chip & peel resistant. I have a vetical fault line on my left index finger that is usually just a white line that runs from the tip down into the bed of that nail. A month or so ago the line split & I could wiggle 1 side w/o the other moving. (bleah!) I used the bonder kit to patch it up & haven't had to cut the nail down to a nubbin. It does have to be reapplied as acetone will eventually remove it, but it's fast to do, doesn't show like a wrap patch & only makes my nail a lil thicker than the others, so I'm happy to do it to save my nails from the damages of everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI've tried the ORLY nail repair kit, and it only works about half the time for me :( it works on actual breaks....but I tried it on my splits and peels, and it didn't work :(
DeleteI'm sorry to hear that as I've had great success with it.
DeleteI have some very similar issues from a car crash I was in as a child. I use a baking soda/peroxide mix (soaked for 2 minutes a hand) whitens nails really nicely with out having to separate anything and does not harm the nail at all.I do this when ever they look kind dirty after I remove polish (my nails are always polished so I do this maybe once a month. I also found that an Olive oil soak for 10-15 minute 2-3 times a week keeps my cuticles from peeling almost like magic. These are things that have helped me to no end and require nothing more than putting your hand in a bowl for a few minutes. Also After the Olive oil soak it's crazy easy to push back your cuticles. To bad you don't live in Idaho we could paint each others 'bad' hand. Anyway hope this helps even a little bit. Also your nails are really nice regardless of having an injury.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the olive oil thing, but I've never tried it!
DeleteYour nails are not bad at all! I, too am another one with issues from an accident of sorts - ripped my right thumbnail off when it got caught in a door at school when I was 11, it grew back with a weird double moon and a really strange cuticle. It's also huge and flat - I call my right thumb my man thumb ;-)
ReplyDeleteouch! just thinking about that hurts my nails.
DeleteTalk about overcoming adversity! Your nails look great!
